Seeking Spiritual Understanding

We join together in many ways to practice our faith.  You do not have to be a member of MacKay to join any of the following groups.

Book Study

Beginning in the early Fall and again in the Winter we discuss interesting and challenging books that have relevance for our Christian Journey.  We have so far studied:
  • LIVING THE QUESTIONS, a 12 session CD study featuring a number of different progressive Christian thinkers
  • Guest speaker: Professor Iman Syed Soharwady, founder of Muslims Against Terrorism
  • THE POWERS THAT BE, Walter Wink
  • LIVING FAITHFULLY IN THE MIDST OF EMPIRE,  UCC Report
  • JESUS AND EMPIRE. Richard Horsley
  • THE GOD WE NEVER KNEW, Marcus Borg
  • IMAGING A CHURCH IN THE SPIRIT, Johnson and MacDonald
  • A NEW CHRISTIANITY FOR A NEW WORLD, John Spong
  • Thank GOD for EVOLUTION, How the Marriage of Science and Religion will transform your Life and our World, Michael Dowd
  • LIVING BUDDHA, LIVING CHRIST by Thich Nhat Hanh
  • OUR WORDS OF FAITH a UCC document
Christian Mindfulness Meditation
We meet in 8 week sessions in the Sanctuary to practice a combination of Christian meditation and Mindfulness meditation.  For some, this group is a means of deepening their practice of prayer.  For some, it is a time where they can centre themselves and practice entering into the "now" - the present moment.  Meditation is an ancient form of prayer that has a long history in the Christian church as well as other faiths.
Monday evenings from 7-8 pm starting January 16th, 2012 in the Sanctuary.  All are welcome and entry is through the front doors on MacKay Street.

Prayer Pyramid
Many people comprise the Prayer Circle at MacKay and anyone is welcome to be part of it and make it part of their spiritual practice.  When a person requests prayer, the Circle is activated by group leaders who call others on their list to inform them of the person(s) for whom we are praying.  Many people report that they feel a great sense of comfort knowing that they are cared for in this way.

Companions on the Journey
This partnership programme is for those on a spiritual journey.  It began in January 2010 with a message in the bulletin to those who wished to participate in a spiritual journey with another person.  The twelve people who signed up were matched randomly with a spiritual partner.  The partners met three or more times over a two-month period.  The first meeting focused on their spiritual history, the second focused on their current spirituality and the final meeting focused on what they are seeking in terms of future spiritual development.  At the end of the two-month period, there was a group discussion meeting. Plans to repeat these sessions with new participants are under discussion.
