Rev. Dr. John R. Montgomery
John Richard Montgomery was born and raised in Toronto. John has four university degrees: a Bachelor of Arts from York University, a Master of Divinity and Master of Arts from the University of Toronto, and a Ph.D. in Church History at the University of Durham, England in 1985. He was ordained (Toronto Conference) in 1982.
For four years post-ordination, he was settled in a 3 point charge near Lindsay, Ontario. He was then called to St. Paul’s Church in Perth where he served for 20 years. MacKay United welcomed him in August, 2006.
John believes that the Christian life calls us to “foster love, compassion, justice, reconciliation and wholeness in the world”. He states that a deep concern for people and a desire to make a difference in their lives were the reasons he entered the ministry. By nature, John considers himself compassionate, with strong interpersonal skills, a breadth of knowledge and an “affable” personality. Others describe him as caring, thoughtful and possessing a ”robust” sense of humour. He is eager and excited to join MacKay United because of our “desire to combine meaningful traditions with innovation, a commitment to growth and a sense of community”. He hopes to share his passion and energy for ministry with our congregation so that together, we can build on the firm foundations of our past and forge a new and exciting future. John is married to Jane Spencer who was born in Ottawa and is an elementary school teacher. They have been married for almost eleven years and have a blended family of five children: John’s three sons Adam (22), Daniel (20) and Ben (18); and Jane’s children Kelly (30) and Craig (27). Their hobbies include hiking, cycling, dancing, cross-country skiing and listening to music. Luckily for MacKay, John also enjoys playing African hand drums.
